It is said that waist beads have been in existence from as far as the 15th century.Waist beads are made from seed beads and glass beads, they originated from Ghana but have spread over the years to more African countries and they bear different names in different tribes in Nigeria.The Hausa-jigida, The Yoruba's- Bebedi, The Igbo's- Mgbaji some others are Giri-Giri, Yomba, Jel-Jeli, Bin Bin and Ileke Idi.There are different uses of African waist beads which are:

BODY SHAPERS: Waist beads serve as natural waist trainers for some women.while wearing waist beads the brand becomes tighter when the user gains weight and then it becomes loose when she looses the weight then it will fall elegantly on her hips.

MATURITY: Waist beads serve as a sign of maturity, that the woman has now reached the age of getting married and suitors can now ask for her hand In marriage.

SEXUAL APPEAL: Waist beads are said to be sexually appealing to men and attracts them.Most African men love to see their women wearing waist beads and majority have admitted that it ''turns them on'' and love to play with them around the waist of their women.

HEALING AND MEDITATION: Some people believe that African waist beads have healing and protective charms to keep danger away and heal stress and anxiety.

EMPLOYMENT: Waist beads are said to help with unemployment because as much as it moves across African continent ,more people learn how to make them and start to make a living from selling and making African waist beads.

Finally African waist beads have different colors which also have different meanings

RED: Confidence and vitallty

BLUE:Loyalty and truth

PINK: Care,beauty,love and kindness

YELLOW:Energy,joy and happiness

BLACK:Power and protection

PURPLE:Royalty,spirituality and wisdom

The list keeps going on and on and its just so nice that a bead can mean something more than just beautification.
